In preparation for this special holiday event, we talked to Autumn and Bobby and asked them all about their favorites holiday dishes from growing up, and what inspired them to create these FIXATE recipes.
Autumn’s favorite family holiday dish is mussels in a white wine sauce from her family’s Feast of the Seven Fishes dinner on Christmas Eve. Bobby, on the other hand, has always been a huge fan of angel hair pasta with squid sauce. “I know, it sounds strange,” Bobby admits. “But it’s a classic Italian recipe my grandma made every year for our Christmas Eve feast. And I loved it so much she would make extra and freeze it just for me so I could devour it throughout the year.”
Autumn and Bobby have fond memories of their favorite holiday foods, and Autumn’s most precious memories of her younger years during the holidays include her entire extended family together in the kitchen… cooking, yelling, questioning, and bumping into each other.
“My grandma was the queen bee,” Autumn tells us while shaking her head. “She was always bossing my aunts around and telling them how to do stuff. But even though it was chaos in the kitchen, everyone was smiling and laughing the whole time. Nuts? YES! But I wouldn’t have it any other way. It was awesome!”
Bobby’s favorite holiday memory wasn’t something they did during the holidays, but what they did at the end of summer in preparation for the holiday season. “Once a year, at the peak of tomato season, we’d drive out to the country and buy an entire truckload of ripe tomatoes. Then we’d spend days in my grandma’s basement coring, blanching, peeling, grinding, and canning enough tomato puree to last the entire year. And for a big Italian family, that’s a lot of tomatoes! The work was grueling, but was definitely worth it.”
Bobby tell us that this magical family experience is when he first became obsessed with the art of cooking, and it’s what inspired him to become a chef.
We were curious if all of these family memories were what inspired this duo create the recipes they did for the FIXATE Holiday Special. Autumn told us that even though she loved the food her grandma prepared during the holidays, it wasn’t always the healthiest. So that’s why she and Bobby worked so hard to turn their family traditions into delicious, healthy recipes that everyone, everywhere, could enjoy — without guilt.
Bobby wants to preserve the joy of eating such a feast, and the traditional dishes that accompany it while still meeting the strict nutritional standards that he and Autumn now live by. That means the food not only has to taste good, but it also has to be good for people, too!
We’ve tasted these recipes and this brother-sister duo team has absolutely nailed it. Since these dishes taste so darn good, it truly is hard to believe that what they cooked up is nutritious. But it is! Big time.
